The Lagos State Accident & Emergency Centre is primarily a trauma emergency room created by the Lagos State government to mitigate the spate of injuries and deaths resulting from Road Traffic Crashes, collapsed buildings, fire accidents, and other injuries in the State.
In order to ensure that such victims are not at the mercy of the funds in their pockets, the State government provides the needed emergency care free of charge to the citizenry requiring emergency care. These gesture of the government removes the responsibility for the level of emergency care accessible by victims from the injured to the government. This ensures that all injured victims brought to the Centre are able to access timely emergency care comparable to best practices around the globe without worrying about the size of their pockets.
The Centre opened its doors on the 10th of March 2010 and has since attended to over 35,000 injured victims in the State. While mortality rates remain low, concerted efforts continue to drive the same even lower and to guide policy that brings to the barest minimum, the rate of injuries in the State.
The care provided in the Centre is based on the principles of Advanced Trauma Life Support training of the American Surgical Association.
The first Medical Director of the Centre was Dr Olawale Adegbite who ran the facility from its inception in March 2010 to 2017. He was followed by Dr Fatai Ishola who had the helm of affairs from 2017 until his retirement from government service in October 2018.
Dr. Adeolu Arogundade who has been in the hospital since its inception took over the affairs of the hospital in November 2018 and is the current Medical Director.
